There were two reasons two go to the Auckland Big Day Out in 2012. One rhymed with Garden and the other was Noel Gallagher. Mr Oasis. Mr Wonder Wall.

He said the day before the show:

"I haven't been to NZ since 1997. I have no recollection of it at all! My tour manager informed me I may have had an impromptu sing song round a piano in a hotel bar with that singer Joe Cocker!! I don't remember that at all!! Scary, eh?"

I saw that show - it was pretty crazy, Liam was drunk, Noel stormed out!

Playing the last ever gig at the BDO, Noel had some big shoes to fill. Joe Strummer did an amazing set after the RCHP in 2000 and the Flaming Lips will live in infamy for their costume filled closing act in 2005.

So did Noel deliver? Let's just say for him to close the Big Day Out with Don't Look Back in Anger was pretty apt. Also die hard fans got three Oasis b-sides! Stocked to here Talk Tonight - I pretty much learnt how to play guitar with the chords from that song! Any way, here's the set list.

The second song on Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds istitled ‘Dream On’. It’s a punchy tune that suggests Oasis fans can dare todream on that Noel can continue to produce great music without the vocalcontribution of estranged brother Liam (and vice versa as Beady Eye’s debutalbum wasn’t too shabby).

If you’ve ever wondered what Oasis would be like withoutLiam, you only ever had to listen to some of that band’s classic b-sides likeThe Masterplan and Talk Tonight. Now, High Flying Birds however is your chanceto here some A-side material in quantity. Similar in tone to Dig Out Your Soul,High Flying Birds runs along at an even pace backed by a crew of usual suspectssuch as Dave Sardy and Marc Rowe.

Noel appears to have progressed as a lyricist – they seem tobe slighty more introspective than standard Oasis fare – where as Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova’s lyrics were meanders slowly down the ‘hall ofwhatever’, songs like The Death of You and Me and X strongly hint at realmoments that have occurred in Noel's life.

The Death of You and Me (lyrics) is a nice wee tune, harking back to arguablyOasis’ last genuine hit, The Importance of Being Idle. Underneath the song is anice basic guitar chord progress but it's wrapped in the usual sounds ofBeatles-esque horns and trumpets. The more you listen, the more you’ll perhaps cometo enjoy this as a classic Noel Gallagher song.

‘AKA What a life’ is a cracking single. Governed by a strongpiano riff and drum beat, Noel is in fine form. If one had to compare it to a priorOasis track, Falling Down jumps out, though I feel this is a better song. Ithas a goodvideo too – The Death of You and Me has a matching video. Watch themtogether for an interesting story featuring Noel’s buddy Russell Brand.

Stop the Clocks (remember that name?) is a fine album closer - clearly written by Noel when Oasis was still Oasis and it should have been a song sung by Liam - it's screaming out for his vocals.

Thanks to the development of the MP3, these days artisticoutput is often consumed song by song – fans would be doing themselves adis-service if they only listened to the singles – this is a fine album, consistentlyenjoyable the whole way through – with no filler tracks as the odd recent Oasisalbum has been guilty of.

Noel should be proud of his debut solo effort,positive sales suggest so as well.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds have announced today they will be playing in New Zealand and Australia as part of the 20th anniversary of the Big Day Out festival. The band will be headlining the Green Stage on the following dates:

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds Set list Debut

Noel Gallagher played his first ever solo show with his group High Flying Birds at Olympia Theatre, Dublin, Ireland on October 2. Quite the historical night really - it was Noel's first set list since the demise of Oasis and it featured a wise selection of Oasis singles and b-sides mixed with his new songs from his debut album (which went number one in the UK and Irish charts this week - promptly outselling Liam's Beady Eye record).

I would imagine it was with a very deliberate action that Noel's song choice to open his set was (It's Good) To Be Free - a sure reference to the solo road he has taken.

Noel Gallagher Finally Announces Solo Album!!!

Noel Gallagher has confirmed today at a press conference in London that his brand new album'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' - the first of TWO recently completed albums - will be released through his own label, Sour Mash Records, on October 17th (this date will vary slightly internationally). 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' features ten new songs and was recorded over the past year in London and Los Angeles. It was co-produced by Noel and David Sardy, whoNoel has worked with previously.

Noel said his band, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, will tour this autumn after the release of the album.

Noel also revealed in the press conference that he has completed a second album which is a continuation of his collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous. This as-yet untitled album will be released in 2012.

Beady Eye Debut Gig Set List

Beady Eye made their live debut in Glasgow, Scotland on March 3.

The post-Oasis band played their new tunes for just over an hour to a packed crowd at the Glasgow's Barrowlands venue.

Beady Eye's first song ever played live to a public crowd was 'Four Letter Word', played shortly after 9pm (GMT). They followed it with a set list made up largely of tracks from their new album 'Different Gear, Still Speeding'. Before playing debut single 'Bring The Light', Gallagher did talk to the crowd, saying: "Right, I reckon it's time to get off the fence, yeah? Because I've seen a few of you sitting on it."

The band ended their set with their cover of World Of Twist's 'Sons Of The Stage'. Gallagher thanked the crowd for "coming along and checking it out" before leaving the stage.

So nothing as riotous as Liam and company have had in the past but it sounds like the band has got themselves off to a decent start.

Beady Eye have announced they are to release their eagerly anticipated debut album ‘DIFFERENT GEAR, STILL SPEEDING’ on 28th February 2011 on Beady Eye Records.

The new album from the ex Oasis members features 13 brand new songs written by the band and was recorded at RAK Studios in autumn 2010 with famed producer U2 Steve Lillywhite.

A taster song for the album, ‘Bring The Light’, was made available for Beady Eye fans on the 9th November here at beadyeyemusic.com and was downloaded or played over 350,000 times in 24 hours. The video has received over 600,000 hits since it was premiered a week later.

The band (Liam Gallagher, Gem Archer, Andy Bell and Chris Sharrock) also put their first UK tour on sale on 26th November with tickets selling out within 30 minutes. So we knew it would happen sooner or later and the fact we're all gagging for it makes it even more special to hear indirect confirmation that Noel Gallagher is indeed recording a solo album. I guess this also indirect confirms Noel is not going to form a new band. No surprises there eh?

Miles Cane from The Last Shadow Puppets confirmed he'd played a guitar track for Noel's album in an interview with the Independent:

Question - Reading the roll-call of guests on your record felt like leafing through the Christmas issue of Q magazine. There's Noel Gallagher, Super Furry Animal Gruff Rhys, the singer from The Courteneers. You must have one hell of a Rolodex.

Answer - Noel sings on one song, he's only doing harmonies. It's great. We met a couple of times, he asked me to play guitar on his solo record. I played on one track, so he repeated the favour. I'm very honoured.

Michael Spencer Jones: The Oasis Singles Covers

We recently brought you an exclusive Q&A with Brian Cannon, who designed some of Oasis’ most memorable sleeve designs and this month, Michael Spencer Jones, the man behind the lens of those iconic shots has discussed some of his favourite pieces which are now available in a limited edition 198 page box set. As much as Oasis were influenced by the music of the likes of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, Michael was equally inspired by their artwork. Both parties created something completely unique whilst referencing these bands and many others like them and the result was a perfect symmetry between music and artwork on records still considered the most defining of their era.

After starting out working in advertising, assisting renowned photographer Stak Aivaloitis on some of the iconic Benson Hedges campaigns, Michael Spencer Jones turned his attentions to Rock ‘N’ Roll. Against the flow of industry traffic to London, Michael moved to Manchester, working with bands such as The Verve and The Stone Roses, earning one of his first commissions shooting the latter’s legendary performance at Spike Island. Two years later in 1992, Michael was introduced to Oasis and over the next 5 years would be on hand to capture their ‘golden years’ as they made their ascent to becoming one of the biggest bands in the world.

The new portfolio boxset features hand signed photographs of all the Oasis artwork created by Michael in his time working with the band. Strictly limited to only 250 copies, the set recollects the group’s history from the early stages of the group to the peak of their popularity.

Supersonic

The shot was taken at Monnow Valley studios in Wales where they had started recording Definitely Maybe. The idea was to have a cluttered studio environment with amps and cables strewn everywhere. Liam was only 21 at the time and already looked like a fully formed rock star so I decided to have him at the front of the shot.

I thought it would be a nice twist if I had my tungsten lights in view, the idea being to put Oasis firmly in the ‘spotlight’ for their debut single. I cross-processed the film which gives the shot its bluey tint.

Shakermaker

The cover was a dali-esque type concept. I’ve always really been into the surrealists such as Magritte and Dali and I liked the idea that hard objects can take the form of soft ones. The idea was that if you played Oasis music loud enough the contents of your room would melt.

The shot was taken in the corner of my apartment in Manchester which had become an improvised studio. I went around all the junk shops in Manchester buying various plastic objects which I then melted on my front porch with an industrial blow torch not too dissimilar from a World War 2 flame thrower! It was really funny seeing the reaction of my neighbours, they just couldn’t figure out what was going off.

Live Forever
When it came to do the photography for Live Forever nobody had any ideas on what was to go on the cover. My first thoughts were that it should feature a scene from everyday life; people walking in a street, or a group of people standing at a bus shelter in the rain maybe; something ordinary. This process of ‘writers block’ went on for several weeks until the band asked me if I had anything in my archive which would be appropriate.

I remembered a photograph that I'd taken a few years earlier of John Lennon’s childhood home in Liverpool that had an ethereal and mysterious quality. The photograph seemed to work on two levels: firstly it was a picture of an ordinary suburban semi which reflected some of the song's lyrical content and secondly when you considered that the greatest artist of the 20th century had grown up in the house the picture took on a far more powerful quality. Noel loved the picture and the sentiment behind it as soon as he saw it. So in many ways it was one of the easiest covers I worked on because the picture had already been taken.

Definitely Maybe

The initial idea for Definitely Maybe came from the back cover to A Collection of Beatles Oldies which was a group photograph of The Beatles gathered round a small table in a Japanese hotel room. Oasis had decided that a similar group photograph should be taken in Bonehead’s front living room. I’d already heard the album many times and knew that it was a great challenge to create an image suitable for the cover. I was therefore horrified when I went to recce the room and saw how small and uninspiring the room was.

The band had assumed that I would take the photograph looking into the room with the bay window as a source of illumination – in other words the opposite direction to how it finally appeared on the cover. To me the bay window was the most interesting feature of the room and so I decided to take the unusual step of shooting into the light of the bay window. I then lit the room accordingly to avoid the band appearing as silhouettes.

The size of the room was made to look bigger by using a wide angle lens but this created a problem with the floor. The stripped flooring (which I believe Bonehead had done himself) had been transformed into this huge ‘desert’ expanse which overwhelmed and dominated the shot. The empty space and what to do with it became a real problem. A week before the shoot I had visited the Egyptology section at The Manchester Science Museum and as a result, the whole notion of lying in a preserved state and the way the Egyptians honoured and represented their past kings was very much fresh in my mind. The idea then occurred to me to have Liam lying outstretched and motionless on the floor with his head towards the camera and with his eyes closed; a rock icon ‘lying in a state’ or indeed some other transcendental state but not of this world.

This would create a first for an album cover but more importantly would solve my problem of what to do with the empty space and the stripped flooring. On the face of it asking the lead singer to adopt this pose for his debut album cover was a bizarre request and so I was relieved when Liam agreed to do it. I know many other singers who would have refused. This along with the spinning globe was the catalyst to the whole shot. Definitely Maybe has to be one of the best covers I did for Oasis and I know the band themselves were really pleased with it.

Cigarettes & Alcohol
I shot the sleeve to Cigarettes & Alcohol at the Halcyon Hotel in London which was a favourite haunt of actors and musicians. The band had just returned from a controversial visit to Sweden where they had been given a ‘free lift’ back to the airport by the Swedish authorities after a number of reported incidents. When they arrived at the hotel they were in very high spirits.

The idea was basically to do a rock’n’roll type scene which mirrored the elements in the song. It was a great and memorable evening; Noel did an impromptu acoustic set for those of us still left in the room in the early hours. There were numerous complaints from the other residents and a four figure room service bill! Tim Abbott is the guy at the front of the shot who had been one of the directors at Creation Records. I shot it on fast grainy b/w film and later hand toned the image blue.

Whatever

The original plan was to shoot the sleeve in the vast open spaces of the Arizona desert. Noel had wanted a vast landscape to evoke a sense of freedom. It was a very simple brief and was to be a relatively straight forward shot. I flew out to the states to photograph the band but after only a few days in Los Angeles the band had the infamous fall-out at the Whisky-a -go-go and Noel disappeared.

At the time it was very serious because the US tour had to be called off and for a while Noel was on the missing persons list. I went back to the UK feeling really disappointed but after two weeks news came through that Oasis had patched things up and the release was still to go ahead. Noel suggested doing the shot in Salisbury Plain but in the end I took the photograph on the Derbyshire moors close to where I had grown up in Sheffield.

Some Might Say
This shot was basically a visual interpretation of the lyrics. Noel had wanted to have the photograph set at a working train station but I thought it would make for a more interesting and surreal shot if the station was disused with a set of characters waiting for a train that would never arrive.

The platform could act as the stage. I must have spent 2 weeks reccying the shot all around England, in the end a neighbour who I had been chatting to about the shot suggested Cromford station near Matlock in Derbyshire. I checked it out and it was the ideal location. I shot it on black and white film and spent a week or so hand painting the photograph with watercolours and a brush to create more of a surrealist effect.

Roll With It

The original idea came from a dream that Noel had where he saw hundreds of TV’s floating down a river. This idea developed to TV’s in the sea and then TV’s on the beach. As Alan White, their new drummer, had just joined the band it was decided the cover would be a band shot so it became the band watching TV’s on the beach. They had wanted to wear Duffel coats which I thought was a nice visual pun and very much Oasis.

The shot which I wanted on the cover was the one that went onto the CD disc itself which in my opinion was a far better shot than the one that appeared on the sleeve. In the end record company messed up with the barcodes and initial sales were not registered thus affecting its chart position, furthermore and quite astonishingly, a batch of CD’s were pressed and distributed with the wrong music on! The pressing plant had put some obscure reggae artist onto the Oasis CD by mistake and so instead of hearing ‘Roll With It’ you heard African reggae music.

I can remember playing my copy and thinking ‘hang about, this doesn’t sound like Oasis’. I’m not quite sure how many copies were pressed like this but I’m sure they’re now highly collectable.

(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?
Noel had described the recent music Oasis had been recording as riot music, and so that was taken as a green light to develop concepts about rioting and anarchy. So early on in the creative process there were one or two discussions about a Molotov cocktail featuring in some way on the cover, however that theme was quickly shelved when we heard tracks like Wonderwall and Cast No Shadow.

After many meetings about the artwork and what was to feature on the cover, it was finally agreed that we would have an early morning street scene with two men walking towards each other. I wanted the shot to be ambiguous and without any moral perspective. Unlike film, the power of the still image comes from its inherent weakness to portray the truth or to tell a narrative; we don’t know if the characters know each other, whether they are good or bad, friendly or hostile, whether they are going to stop and talk to each other or who they are?

It’s a brief narrative rooted in a very ambiguous moment and is for those reasons one of my favourite Oasis covers.

Wonderwall

I had originally shot Liam for the front cover of Wonderwall in Primrose Hill, London but Noel had accidentally stumbled across us doing the shoot on his way to Creation Records. I can remember a bloke jumping out of a black cab and yelling at us through the railings of the park. I thought it was an Oasis fan heckling us so I ignored all the shouting and continued with the shoot.

The shouting continued so I finally decided to go and tell this bloke to leave us alone and then realized to my astonishment that the bloke was in fact Noel Gallagher. He explained that Wonderwall was ‘a f**king love song!’ and that no way was ‘our kid’ appearing on the cover. The shoot was quickly aborted and in the end I re-shot it the following day with a girl from Creation Records called Anita Heyert. I used the same black and white infra-red effect on this cover as I did on Live Forever.

Don’t Look Back In Anger

For the cover of Don’t Look Back In Anger Noel had decided to pay homage to an incident which had happened at Abbey Road studios in 1968. It was inspired by a story about Ringo Starr walking out on the Beatles because he felt that he was not wanted. He was eventually persuaded to come back into the band and on his return George Martin, the Beatles producer, had decided to deck his entire drum kit out in flowers as a statement of love and gratitude. Noel thought this sentiment would make an interesting idea for a cover and so suggested we had the bands equipment covered in thousands of red, white and blue flowers, the colours of the Union Jack.

It was originally going to be an overhead shot and I had a scaffolding tower erected but I then decided to shoot it at eye level so that the bass drum with its Union Jack swirl could feature more prominently in the shot. The white piano was a reference to John Lennon. I had Creation Records import 5,000 carnations, of those 3,500 were white and of those 3,500, half were dyed blue as blue carnations do not grow naturally. A real privilege to have done this cover as it is one of the greatest pop songs ever.

D’You Know What I Mean?

I shot the cover to D’you Know What I Mean? in an alleyway in Wigan, Lancashire next to a boxing club. An extremely difficult shoot to execute simply because of the number of people involved. Initially there was no shape to the photograph, and the band melted into the crowd and almost became invisible. The light was also very poor which did not help matters.

The photograph eventually came together when I positioned a young woman holding her baby alongside a girl in her school blazer in front of the band. This seemed to give the shot the extra depth and shape it needed. The sun briefly came out and I knew this would be the shot that would end up on the cover. The single, although not political, was released just prior to the 1997 general election. After 18 years of Conservative government there was definitely a sense that this was a rallying call for change. It certainly went through my mind when I was taking the shot. It turned out to be one of my favourite photographs of the band.

Be Here Now
Originally the cover was to feature 4 separate photos each with a separate band member. To overcome the mathematical problem that there were five people in the band Liam would have a cameo presence in all of the shots. Noel wanted to be photographed up a tree playing guitar, Alan White in some east end pub, Guigsy on a beach in St. Lucia and Bonehead wanted to be photographed relaxing by a swimming pool at night with a rolls Royce submerged in it as an homage to Keith Moon. However, concerns grew that 4 separate images on a CD cover would have little impact and the idea was dropped.

All was not lost as it became apparent that of all the ideas put forward by the band Bonehead’s idea of a Rolls Royce in a swimming pool was by far the best. Many locations were considered including Clivedon where the Profumo scandal of the 1960’s had taken place. Eventually Stocks Hotel in Hertfordshire, the former home to the Playboy magnate, Victor Lowness was chosen as it had a swimming pool directly in front of the house. The shoot was fraught with difficulties. Firstly, Stocks Hotel was a hotel open to the public and as word got out the hotel came under siege. Secondly far too much alcohol was consumed on set and so by evening time the shoot had become chaotic, also one of the generators blew. In the end a shot from the daytime session was chosen although the shots I took at the night-time session are very interesting.

All Around The World

With any conceptual photograph there is always an initial idea or trigger which forms the basis for the inspiration. With All Around The World the initial inspiration came from a photograph taken from the top of a beach side hotel in Florida where Beatles fans had communicated with their idols above by writing messages to them in the sand.

To write the song title in the sand was an obvious development for the cover, it also fitted in with the global sentiment of the song. People have been writing messages in the sand for centuries and so for me I saw the beach as a global messaging board or forum where anybody could come along and post a message, in retrospect like a Stone Age version of twitter.

However, conceptual ideas don’t always work visually and the problem with this shot was that there was nothing of substance to give the photograph depth or shape. At this point I decided that it was vital to have the sea featured in some way in the shot. It would also add to the notion that the message was transitory and that at some point the message would be washed away by an incoming wave. In the end it was myself who wrote the message in the sand by using a stick.

The positioning was vital, too close to the sea and the sea would wash it away and too far away and it would not be possible to have both the message and the sea in shot at the same time. I took the shot from the top of an extended hydraulic arm attached to a fire engine which was in a fixed position on the beach front (in Bournemouth, England). There was only one stretch of beach so the positioning of the lettering had to be right first time. It would not be possible to rub it out and start again as this would have disturbed the appearance of the sand.

When I was taking the picture I was struck by the way the sea entered the frame at the top of the picture, this was very reminiscent of beer overflowing down the side of a glass and this to me makes the shot.

Beady Eye is the new Oasis

From the train wreck of a band break up that was the split of Oasis comes a new band fronted by Liam Gallagher and backed by his former comrades:

Beady Eye.

What the fuck kind of name is that? Well, as long as the music is good, who cared, know what I mean gov?

Beady Eye’s roster line-up is basically the final line-up of Oasis, but obviously without guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher because he finally threw his toys after Liam threw his toys one time too many.

Andy Bell shifts to guitar in the new band having previously been on bass duties. Bass duties will be undertaken in live performances by Jeff Wootton. Presumably this means Andy will do bass in studio recordings. Gem Archer will do lead guitar duties and Chris Sharrock will hit the skins. Oasis's longtime live keyboard player Jay Darlington has been retained and will also play live with Beady Eye.

Apparently Beady Eye have been in the studio with one of U2's producers, Steve Lillywhite and are aiming for an October release date for their first single. You can follow Beady Eye on Twitter!

Liam has said he is now relishing his post-Oasis career after initally being "gutted"about the break-up. "In hindsight it was the best thing that’s ever happened, because we're free to do whatever we want,"

Liam also apparently confirmed that he has not spoken to his brother and former bandmate Noel Oasis split.

Beady Eye's first single is Bring the Light. It's b-side will be Sons of the Stage.

‘Time Flies’ is the complete singles collection celebrating the work of Oasis from start to finish. Released on 14th June through Big Brother Recordings, the songs that comprise this album span fifteen glorious years walked tall alongside a staggering seven consecutive number one albums. 1994’s ‘Definitely Maybe’, 1995’s ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’, 1997’s ‘Be Here Now’, 2000’s ‘Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants’, 2002’s ‘Heathen Chemistry’, 2005’s ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ and their last from 2008, ‘Dig Out Your Soul’. Starting with their irresistible debut, ‘Supersonic’ and finishing with their very last release, ‘Falling Down’, the album features all 26 singles - 23 Top Tens including 8 No.1's. A deluxe version of ‘Time Flies’ features all 36 videos ever made (all previously unreleased) including versions made for the UK and America, as well as the last ever recorded Oasis live show from The Roundhouse in London on the 21st July 2009.

April 1994 it begins. Effortlessly, the classic singles, ‘Supersonic’ and ‘Shakermaker’ provided a tangible feeling that something was happening; then came ‘Live Forever’, where we saw a young Liam Gallagher nailed to a chair in that bizarre video and somehow the notion that one of ours could again excite, incite and not to mention, sell millions of records was very real.

They virtually reignited an ailing industry and revitalised the global music scene. They did this by becoming “the most complete pop group on the planet”. They knew it too; as Noel Gallagher, the band’s principal songwriter, simply explained, “We’re not arrogant, we just believe we’re the greatest band in the World.” His younger brother who went on to become one of the ‘greatest frontmen of all time’, once remarked, “There’s Elvis and me. I couldn’t say which of the two is best.” Oasis owned attitude, and noise and confusion often followed. Early on, Noel said, “All I know is that the gigs are selling out and we’re probably gonna get in loads more trouble on this tour…”

It was this kind of self belief and ambition that flung the world open to Oasis. From their landmark 'arrival' performance at T in the Park in 1994 to the now legendary gigs at Maine Road, a weekend of history-making at Knebworth, world famous venues that included sell out shows at Madison Square Gardens and the Hollywood Bowl, and stadiums from Wembley to River Plate, Argentina and beyond, as well as just about every single festival here and abroad, Oasis rapidly grew but never lost their high cool. How many bands manage that - and why?

Undoubtedly, millions identified, aspired, shared the dream of the boys from Burnage making very, very good. Their outspokenness and the very real relationship of Noel and Liam kept us enthralled and amused. At times, it provided real drama, but nevertheless the humanity shone through more often than not.

So what is there left to say about the greatest rock 'n' roll band of our time? These could be the best days of our lives. And they were. And they still are. Oasis entertained on every level. At every concert tens of thousands united to sing along to, be moved by, be energised by and reminisce with this incredible set list - a definitive chronicle of a generation, national anthems, a series of musical lunar landings. Who did you steal a glance from during ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’? Mosh with to 'Lyla'? Who did you want to ‘Live Forever’with? And why did it all work so well, for so long, all around the world, for so many people? For a time, they did change the way we walked, we talked, the way we dressed. There have been so many iconic gigs throughout the history of Oasis. From Maine Road, Wembley Stadium (both new and old!), Madison Square Gardens to River Plate Stadium in Argentina, to name a very small handful.

Liam, still Mad Fer It, at the Brit Awards

Liam Gallagher was back to his best award show punter baiting best when he outraged the Brit Awards by swearing, throwing his trophy in the crowd and appearing to snubbing his brother.

Liam appeared to collect the award for the Brits Album of 30 Years on behalf of Oasis.

Liam appeared onstage briefly to collect the trophy, and thanked the band's line up - apart from his brother Noel, the band's main songwriter and second vocalist. After receiving the award from Jimmy Page, Liam said: "I'd like to thank Bonehead, Guigsy, Alan White ... the best bands in the fucking world live forever." He didn’t mention Noel who wrote the songs for the album and played guitar and sang on the number one hit, Don’t look Back in Anger.

He then threw the microphone and the award into the audience and walked offstage.

Backstage at the event, Liam said: "I don't know if we deserved it because there has been loads of great albums over the last 30 years.

Oasis: Looking Back in Fondness

So like I was working in a chicken fast food restaurant late one year in the mid 90s when I heard a song about ‘Rolling With It’ and thought it sounded pretty sweet. And that was that. Didn’t hear it again till weeks later. Then I heard Wonderwall. I NEEDED that song. I recall my mother drove me to K Mart (those were the days!) and I got what had turned out to be the biggest selling album in recent times. Oasis mania had arrived in Jimmy Jangles' house and I began to.. er.. roll with it.

I played that album non stop for two weeks. Then a friend of my lil bro turned up. This guy was like Mr Music Man and was like: "Oh Oasis?, here’s a copy of their first album."

And I'm like "Their first album? Oh, they did that Live Forever song I saw a video of once where they buried the drummer? Sweet."

Now we had two albums for the soundtrack of our summer which came down to playing Oasis in the garage while playing pool, drinking Steinlager. Bless. There may have been some Stone Roses played too, but that's another story.

And thus I became an Oasis diehard. U2 who? Summer finished and I went to university and started getting my hands on everything Oasis I could. I bought all the singles I could find. There was no ‘real’ internet in 1996/97/98 – it was just this magical thing I could get at the University labs so there was no real web surfing, it was all newspaper headlines. Yes, I had a folder full of Oasis articles where they stated “We’re bigger than God” and “We hope Blur die of Aids”. I signed letters home to my family as Noel Gallagher. That's how cool I was, even back then...

I decided to learn the guitar as I had to be able to play Wonderwall. Playing Oasis b-Sides became a speciality.

This fandom culminated in a crazy Oasis concert in Wellington where Liam stormed off, Noel did an acoustic set featuring Setting Sun with the band in full force for the last song of Champagne Supernova. Rough as, but Mega.

Anyways I thought I’d reminisce about each Oasis album.

Definitely Maybe

Who wants to be a rock n roll star? If you believe the lyrics, Liam was one before the album made him one. It was the seemingly self referencing that was so clever. It was the same for GNR's Welcome to the Jungle – they were singing about the excess and trappings of Rock Stardom before they had it. It was like both bands were in on the joke about rock and roll joke before both bands became a rock and roll joke in many people’s eyes. I call those people Oasis Haters. Supersonic Live Forever, Slide Away. Songs that will stick around as markers in rock history for all those who follow (as they followed The Stones, The Who, David Bowie and of course, The Beatles.

What’s the Story? (Morning Glory!)

Did you need a little time to wake up after being run down by Definitely Maybe? The title reference to cocaine would pick you up no end with songs Wonderwall, Roll With It, Don’t Look Back in Anger and a song so good the Beatles should have written it, Champagne Supernova. Those songs define Oasis and the Britpop mania wave they rode (and created). They will be living off the royalties from those songs till the day they die. Morning Glory is probably the soundtrack to a generation of British folks.

Be Here Now

Supposedly the Great Rock and Roll Swindle. The punters were eager for a fight and they easily stepped into the ring when they realised that Be Here Now was not another Morning Glory. A few weak songs (despite the A grade D’yer Know What I Mean and All Around the World) and over blown production left many fans turned off and Oasis labelled as has beens. On reflection, Be Here Now is chock full of great songs – the song structures in many are perfect – witness Don’t Go Away acoustically and any objective listener will note its beauty, shame its album version solo was basically a rip off of Slide Away crossed with Live Forever.

Heathen Chemistry

An album full of great songs but, like Be Here Now, the sum of its parts was not greater than the songs on it. On their own songs like, Songbird, Stop Crying Your Heart and Born on a Different Cloud were majestic. As an album the punters when eh, Oasis diehards loved it – the singles were quite popular.

Don’t Believe the Truth

This was the unexpected comeback. Taken as a whole, this was an Oasis album you could listen to as one piece of music and totally enjoy. Lyla was a fun, poppy single, The Importance of Being Idle was a surprisingly quirky hit. The album owed a small debt to the Velvet Underground and a more considered song writing effort from Noel (the album did however have many songs from other band members). Let There Be Love was a beautiful album closer and could be seen as the antithesis of the sibling rivalry that dominated the headlines as Liam and Noel had regularly argued their troubles out in public over the years. Sadly the sentiment of the album closer was lost following the break up of Oasis after the release of the next album.

Dig Out Your Soul

If you had to label an Oasis album as psychedelic, Dig Out Your Soul was an Eed up Oasis plugging in George Harrison’s sitar and turning it to 10 and a half. Falling Down and I'm Out of Time were Oasis best singles since anything from Morning Glory. Waiting for the Rapture was a wall of Oasis that had live favourite all over it. Lyrically it was sharp and it had an awesome example of drumming expertise from Zak Starkey on The Shock of the Lightning. If Don’t Believe the Truth was the album Oasis should have released after Morning Glory in preference to Be Here Now, this album should have been the immediate follow up (like Zooropa was soon released after to U2's Achtung Baby).

Lucky for those still listening to Oasis, this album did follow DBTT and so it got plenty of listens and some good reviews.

In hindsight, that the single Falling Down was first Oasis song in over a decade to not go top 10 in the UK was the signal that perhaps Oasis’ time was coming to an end. In the tour that followed, Noel finally got fed up, smashed Liam’s guitar and quit the band.

Conclusion: You know what's coming right?

For an Oasis diehard it's very easy to look back on Oasis' music with fondness. The music has been the soundtrack to my life so it's kind of hard to think of Oasis in any other way. As a chorus to one of their b-sides went, thank you for the good times.

'(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' Nominated For Brit Award

Oasis' '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' has been nominated for 2010's 'BRITs Album of 30 Years'. The 14 x platinum album has sold a staggering 14 million copies worldwide, 4.2 of which are in the UK alone.

The number one album marked the band's first UK number one single with 'Some Might Say' as well as live favourites, 'Roll With It', 'Wonderwall', 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and 'Champagne Supernova'. Three of those were number ones.

The BRITs category is open to the top-selling, BRIT-award winning albums of the past 29 years to celebrate the Award's 30th birthday. Fans of the album can vote for it HERE

Here’s some history on the Oasis song, Whatever.

"Whatever" is a classic Oasis, written by the band's lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. It was released on December 18, 1994 as a stand-alone single bridging the gap between Oasis' debut album, Definitely Maybe, and their second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?.

"Whatever" entered the UK Singles Chart at #3, Oasis’ first single to enter the top 5, something every Oasis single released since has also accomplished, aside from the download-only single "Lord Don't Slow Me Down", "I'm Outta Time" and "Falling Down". Like "Lord Don't Slow Me Down," this is a non-album release.

The strings were played by the London Session Orchestra which featured former ELO violinist Wilf Gibson. The strings were arranged by Nick Ingham and Noel Gallagher.

Part of the song's melody was lifted from Neil Innes' song "How Sweet to Be an Idiot". Innes successfully sued Oasis for plagiarism and was awarded subsequent royalties. The portion of the melodic line in question accompanies the lyrics "I'm free, to be whatever I" of the Gallagher version.

When Oasis performed the song for Top of the Pops, they mimed and one of the cello players from the string ensemble was replaced by rhythm guitarist Bonehead, who clearly had no idea how the instrument was supposed to be played and mimed terribly. Towards the end of the song, he gave up the pretense and started using the bow to conduct Oasis.

As part of the show, Whatever was introduced by Damon Albarn of Blur who would later famously feud with Oasis. As Albarn introduced Whatecer, the Gallagher brothers made rude hand gestures behind him which only served to heighten the feud between the bands – Noel went on to infamously wish that Albarn would die of AIDS.

"Whatever" has been performed live by Oasis many times. They often ended live versions of the song with lyrics adapted from The Beatles song "Octopus's Garden".

They have also been known to add the lines "All the young blues....carry the news...," in reference to the Mott the Hoople song "All the Young Dudes". The "blues" in the lyric are the fans of the Gallaghers' beloved Manchester City Football Club. This line had to be omitted from the original studio version of Whatever because of copyright concerns.

Swollen Hand Blues was a b-side to the very final Oasis single, Falling Down. Recorded at Abby Road studies, Falling Down reached number 10 on the singles chart. As usual, Noel Gallagher is chanelling The Beatles but referring to the Rolling Stones. The b-side was notable that it was the only song that was not a remix b-side that were included with the 3 singles from Dig Out Your Soul.

An excerpt of the b-side song "Those Swollen Hand Blues" appears at the end of "Mucky Fingers", second track of Oasis' 2005 album Don't Believe the Truth.

Liam confirms intention to do solo record

Liam Gallagher says his songs with his new band are better than Oasis

The 37-year-old singer has been working with every member of Oasis, except brother Noel who quit the group in August, on fresh material and plans to have an album out by July.

He told MTV Italy: "We've been demoing some songs that we've had about, that we've had for a while. Just doing that, on the quiet, not making a big fuss about it.

"After Christmas we might go in the studio and record them and hopefully have an album out in July.
"We'll do it in a different kind of way now. I'll try and reconnect with a new band, new songs, and I'm feeling confident about the songs.

"I'm feeling a million per cent confident that they could be better than Oasis."

The band broke-up last summer after Liam's older brother Noel quit following a backstage fight before a concert in Paris, France, which saw them smash up each other's guitars.

However, Liam believes his guitarist sibling used the fight as an excuse to leave so he could work on his own solo project.

He explained in an interview with Italian radio station Radio Deejay: "To be quite honest, I think Noel wanted out.

"We had an argument - but we've had bigger ones, about more important people. Basically, I think he wanted out, wanted something different, but he hadn't got the b******s to tell the band or the fans."

Who was the Fat Dancer from Take That?

“The Fat Dancer from Take That” was the name given to Robbie Williams by Noel Gallagher in 2000 when they were in the middle of a public slanging match. Noel is famous in some parts for his quips and quotes. Some are designed to generate publicity and some are just mean. Wishing Damon Albarn from Blur would die of aids was perhaps his most vile comment of them all.

Robbie responded to the fat dancer comment by calling Noel a "mean spirited dwarf". The comments continued and escalated when Noel offered Williams a gun so that he could kill himself.

This was all following how Williams was befriended by both Noel and Liam Gallagher, at the time when their band was the world’s most popular. Paranoid and taking too much cocaine, according to Mr Williams, they fell out in proper rock star fashion – through the press.

The reference to Robbie being a fat dancer is now a tad ironic as though Robbie had become a successful singer in his own right at the time the comment was made, he went on to become a major solo artist, being just as popular as Oasis in their hey day.

In 2009 the last laugh could be on Robbie as Oasis split up leaving Noel open to quips that he’s just that old cranky bastard from Oasis. Still, the rumours abound that Robbie is going to rejoin with the reformed Take That so we'll see what commnet Noel makes if that happens...

Liam Talks Oasis Spilt

Liam Gallagher has spoken publicly about the future of the Oasis for the first time since his brother Noel quit in August this year, and although he admits Oasis are over he plans to continue making music with the remaining members - guitarist Gem Archer, bassist Andy Bell and drummer Chris Sharrock.

He said: "Oasis are no longer. I think we all know that. So that's done. Without a doubt. And it's a shame, but that's life. We had a good run at it. The thing about Oasis is, no one ended it for us, we ended Oasis. Which was kind of cool. I'm thinking of what my next step is musically, which is all my mind's on.

"It's not all for the worst because Noel can do his thing and I can do mine. People will be able to buy his records. People will be able to buy our records. So everyone's happy."

The 37-year-old rocker - who has an eight-year-old son, Gene, with his wife Nicole Appleton, and two other children from previous relationships - added to Britain's The Times newspaper: "We've always had a lot of fun on tour. I've always had a lot of fun. That's why it was never hard work for me. It was a joy and it was always a bit of a bummer when the tour ended. You know, it was great.

Well, I want Oasis to party like it's 1995

Like a Cassandra to his own Trojan war, it might just be that last year Liam Gallagher saw the events of the past few weeks advancing over the horizon and felt unmoved to avert them. If, as sources close to the band suggest, the rest of Oasis plan to continue beyond Noel Gallagher’s departure, then the Liam-penned final tune on last year’s Dig Out Your Soul will assume some prescience. “Who’s to say/You were right/And I was wrong?/Soldier on.” Would they dare to, though? What kind of an ego would it take to continue Oasis without their songwriter Noel Gallagher, the man who gave them Live Forever, Wonderwall and Supersonic?

There’s no shortage of anecdotal mater-ial to suggest that Liam has succumbed to many of the clichés that surround the pampered rock frontman. Own dressing room? Check. Boutique clothing range? Check. Personal security guard? Check. From here, it would be natural to infer a gulf that has Noel and the rest of Oasis on one side and Liam — who has long since relinquished even the need to be present at soundchecks — on the other. And yet it’s worth noting that — in the wake of the fight that nixed their appearance at Friday’s Paris en Seine festival — Liam and his wife Nicole Appleton high-tailed it to Lake Como in Italy with the Oasis bassist Andy Bell and his girlfriend in tow. According to one insider: “People are scared of Liam. And if he wants to carry on the band, Andy and [guitarist] Gem Archer will probably go along with it.” In the statement released hours after the Paris altercation, Noel pronounced himself disappointed with the “lack of support and understanding from my management and bandmates that left me with no other option than to seek pastures new”.

The history of brothers in bands — from the Bee Gees to the Kinks — is dotted with recriminations and subsequent reconciliations. Oasis have had their fair share, most seriously in Barcelona nine years ago, when Liam goaded his brother by casting doubt on the legitimacy of Noel’s daughter Anaïs. Wasn’t there every reason, then, to assume that these latest wounds would also heal? Their mother Peggy seems to think so. “They love each other,” she says. “They’ve had fights before and got over it.”

Mothers often know best, but mothers are also rarely able to view their children’s spats as, well, anything more than children’s spats. In the wake of Oasis’s no-show at the V Festival — attributed to Liam’s laryngitis — the singer had seemed similarly keen to play down rumours that the band’s future was in jeopardy. Bypassing the spellchecking software on his phone, he issued a reassuring tweet to his fans: “The voice may of disappeared, but I’m still here ... I’m gutted your gutted what can I say f*** all at the moment.”

Friends of the guitarist, however, were left with an altogether graver picture. Noel told friends that Oasis would never play a British show again, the implication being that if they could just see out their remaining European festival shows, he could walk away quietly. If Oasis had fulfilled the Paris obligation, they would have had just one more show left to play.

So what happened at Rock en Seine to tip Noel over the edge? Despite occupying the neighbouring dressing room, the New York band Vampire Weekend have kept their counsel, merely hinting at the weirdness of coming off stage following a triumphant set to encounter ugly scenes. The Scottish singer-songwriter Amy McDonald was less discreet: “Oasis cancelled again, with one minute to stage time! Liam smashed Noel’s guitar, huuuge fight!”

Speaking to The Times, a source close to Noel said: “The problems began even before Liam arrived in Paris. He travelled separately from the band, as he does these days, on Eurostar. By the time he got to the venue he was his usual confrontational self. He said things about Noel’s family and made pointed personal insinuations about Sara [MacDonald, Noel’s partner].” What we now also know is that the guitar smashing involved an acoustic guitar given to Liam by Appleton, to which Noel laid waste before walking away.

In any band of Oasis’s stature there are usually systems in place to stop the build-up of tensions. If pre-gig drinking has the potential to become an issue, management and the security staff employed by them can ensure that group members make it onstage in a state of relative sobriety. In the days when Liam Gallagher was merely the frontman with Oasis, such matters would have been dealt with by the group’s management company, Ignition. In 2009, however, things have ceased to be as simple. Accompanying Gallagher on Eurostar was Stevie Allen, Liam’s personal security guard and the business partner with whom the singer set up his clothing line Pretty Green. As anyone who has kept up with Liam’s Twitter updates this year will know, the singer’s enthusiasm for Pretty Green seems, at times, to have eclipsed his enthusiasm for his band.

Sources close to Noel say that he is furious at what he sees as Liam’s willingness to use the goodwill earned by Oasis’s music to sell clothes. The confusion between Liam’s band and brand was further heightened by the singer’s recent interview with NME, arranged through the PR he uses for Pretty Green. Parading various garments on his label, Liam confirmed that the pair were no longer on speaking terms, alleging: “It takes more than blood to be my brother.”

Others have questioned the wisdom of a band with Oasis’s fractious history committing to a ten-month world tour — not least because of issues around the recording of Dig Out Your Soul that were still not resolved before its release. After eight weeks of sessions at Abbey Road studios, Liam had yet to record a single vocal. Speaking to Q magazine, Noel revealed that Liam waited until mixing for the album commenced in LA before recording his vocals. Even then, halfway though the fortnight-long stay in LA, Liam fled to London, saying he had “some business to attend to”. This, it turns out, was his wedding to Appleton, to which none of his bandmates had been invited. As a result, Noel told Q, the band were forced to shelve two album tracks, including “an epic, Champagne Supernova song with backwards Are You Experienced-type rhythms” and a 50-piece choir. Anything but contrite, Liam tweeted: “A 50-piece choir on it ... more like 50 shit guitar solos on it.”

And that’s the way it’s been with the Gallaghers this year. “He’s constantly going on about how much soul he’s got,” Noel said. “I assume Bob Marley had soul ... I don’t see Bob Marley at the Rainbow [the scene of the famous Wailers concert in 1977] wailing about the colour of the napkins in his dressing room.”

Paul Rees, the editor of Q, remembers being struck by the way that, throughtout their interview, Noel kept bringing the subject around to his brother. “He seemed so tired,” Rees says. “People who have seen them on tour this year have noticed that he seems to be going through the motions.”

Beneath the weariness, however, is hurt. “He’s never seen my little lad [one year-old Donovan]. Just pictures,” Noel confided (a claim strenuously refuted by Liam). “If you were in the circle of people that we are in, you wouldn’t have him in the house if he spoke to you the way he speaks to me and my family.”

One bone of contention appears to be MacDonald herself, who Liam is said to have consistently sought to antagonise. “At the Brits in 2007 Liam snatched her glass of wine and allowed it to smash at her feet,” one insider alleges. And the source of the acrimony? “They move in different circles. Sara knows journalists and people in the media. He sees her as sleeping with the enemy. Liam seems to prefer celebrities. He’s friends with Gok Wan and Holly Willoughby. Noel, meanwhile, prefers the company of musicians.”

Rees echoes the sentiments: “Noel has always been keen to broaden his musical horizons — perhaps more than Oasis would allow at times.” The man who discoverer Oasis, Alan McGee, reckons it’ll be less than five years before the brothers end up on the same stage together. Friends of Noel suggest that ten years is a more realistic assessment. But If Liam’s ego has spiralled out of control, Noel may want to stop and consider whether he inadvertently had a hand in the process. Seven years ago, when his younger brother brought his maiden songwriting effort Little James to the table, Noel encouraged him to write more. Now, with three creditable efforts on Dig Out Your Soul, it’s conceivable that Liam — who, lest we forget, started Oasis without his brother — feels bold enough to carry the burden of their reputation.

In a funny way, he may even have a point. In this divorce, Liam may come off surprisingly well — at least in monetary terms. It may not excite the critics, but an Oasis that functions as a travelling jukebox — Britpop’s first heritage act — may play in Liam’s favour. Hard to imagine? Go and see Oasis live and the beery mass you see bellowing the words to Wonderwall bear far greater resemblance to Liam than Noel. Will they mind if Oasis never record another note? Or do they just want to party like it’s 1995?

It seems a lil misguide really as Noel constantly claimed he wanted to be in the biggest band in the world and to do that you gotta play all the big gigs... He also says it ended with a whimper, not so true as word on the street is that Liam smashed one of Noel's guitars in an argument just before Oasis were due to hit the stage....

Noel Gallagher's decision to quit Oasis is years overdue, says Nick Hasted. The band were no longer relevant. And yet there is much to celebrate about their Champagne Supernova.

When the end finally came for Oasis, it did so with a whimper. The violent altercations between the Gallagher brothers, a source of knockabout humour in the good days, had turned sour and abusive, said Noel, so he walked out with relief. One of the biggest bands in the history of British rock had just imploded, and the music world reacted with a bored shrug. Everyone, it's quite clear, had lost interest long ago – Oasis, perhaps, most of all. It makes you wonder what legacy all those tens of millions of the band's albums in homes worldwide amounts to. What mark have they left on the rock history books that they were more in thrall to than any band before them?

The ledger looks thin to most critics, these days. It has been more than a decade since Oasis made an album that mattered for any reason other than to justify another money-vacuuming tour. In that sense they were like the modern-day Stones, 20 years earlier in their careers. Watching last year's shows in Liverpool and London, with Noel, wounded after a moronic fan crashed into his ribs, hunched in the shadows, and Liam still standing motionless, singing the same old hits, Oasis looked like a rusting machine, running down fast.

Their lasting influence on music seems at first to be unremittingly awful. The critical fashion for bands of angular intelligence and artful arrangements, for Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes and the rest, is in response to a so-called "indie landfill" of their desperately unimaginative guitar-toting peers. That hole seems populated entirely by Oasis support acts: The Enemy, The Fratellis, Twisted Wheel. It was fellow Mancunians The Stone Roses who first let the British musical clock, relentlessly futuristic till then, turn back to acknowledge The Beatles, in 1989, while welding them to brand-new acid-house. Oasis only looked at rock's past, permitting no future in a way Johnny Rotten never meant. Noel's kneejerk protest at Jay-Z's Glastonbury appearance last year said everything about a band paralysed with fear of progress.

But there is a flipside to Oasis's influence. The exhilarating, arrogant demand for success of early songs such as "Rock'n'Roll Star", delivered by council estate kids from Burnage with nothing to aid them but the self-belief that burned through Noel's writing then, motivated a generation of working-class boys just as powerfully as punk. If Noel had nothing concrete to say to that generation once their dreams had awakened enough to pick up a guitar instead of working "when there's nothing worth working for", as Liam once sneered, he had still done more good than today's more refined indie kings.

The mass audience that resulted, filling global stadia irrespective of their creative decline, is Oasis's glory and curse. Theirs has always been the crowd most likely to hurl pints of piss and turn to violence, in a throwback to the rock shows of Noel's beloved 1970s. Horrified reports from their huge Manchester gigs this year even mentioned a man flinging his own excrement at those around him, as if there was something feral, barely human, about their fans. These hooligans were enfranchised by Oasis, and no other rock band. They are part of a football-style support; faithful as if to a home-town team, irrespective of form, and constantly replenished by fresh generations.

Other "people's bands" have followed in their wake. And not just the cluelessly conservative likes of The Enemy, whose album title We'll Live and Die in These Towns denies Oasis's dreams of escape. Fiercely intelligent, underestimated working-class bands in their teens and early twenties have also been inspired by the Gallaghers. At Oasis's Liverpool gig last year, I bumped into Dundee's The View, giddy with excitement at seeing their heroes. Uxbridge's brand-new 12 Dirty Bullets have the requisite football-style fans, but also a songwriter, Jamie Jamieson, who literately questions his environment as Noel never would. "They were massively inspirational," he tells me, "because they represent where we come from. Rock stars like David Bowie seem like they come from another planet. Oasis could be the lads next door, who just happened to take over the world."

Oasis's golden years were only ever short, stretching from their 1994 debut Definitely Maybe to 1996's Britpop Götterdämmerung at Knebworth, when 250,000 fans saw them over two days, the cocaine flowed, and the world seemed theirs for the taking. I was there as a fan, separated from friends for the whole long day, with no apparent prospect of getting home as the rain fell, and Oasis began. But when that impossibly huge crowd roared themselves hoarse as one to the communal anthems which every song on their first two albums had become, nothing else mattered to me. Rock hasn't had that warming generational unity since.

Noel Gallagher has admitted on many occasions since that that is when Oasis should have split. He knew it was the top, from which they could only fall. He said he didn't have the nerve to do what his hero Paul Weller had done with The Jam, that he had to keep his band-mates in jobs. It sounded bravely honest the first time, just sad every time afterwards. Oasis's legacy to Noel Gallagher had become one of him dutifully clocking on at stadia and studios, the opposite of the reason they formed.

Flicking through the channels the other day, I caught Noel singing "Half a World Away", the great old Oasis B-side The Royle Family uses as a theme song, this time alone with an acoustic guitar. It was deeply affecting, in a way not a second of his band's empty thunder was last year. The last remaining good thing Oasis can do is turn out the lights, and let their leader go. When not being closed-minded and cloth-eared, they have freed more people than we'll ever know. Noel Gallagher, unburdened from his dying creation, deserves no less.

It seems odd to be laughing about the Oasis break up using one of the most inhuman people that ever existed as the joke. I guess it can remind us there are are worse things that happen in the world than two brothers having a spat.

Liam to continue as Oasis?

Liam Gallagher insists there is “no way” he will reconcile with his brother Noel.

The Oasis singer told an Italian waiter he will never let his sibling return to the group after the guitarist quit last Friday following a fist fight just minutes before they were due on stage in Paris.

Vincenzo Della Corte – who served the rocker, his wife Nicole Appleton and bandmate Andy Bell at Lake Como’s il Gatto Nero restaurant on Tuesday – said: “I asked him what the future was and he said it was all over and there was no way he would get back with Noel.

“He said that Noel had his style of music and he had his and they would be going their separate ways.”

Despite Liam’s professional turmoil, Vincenzo was amazed by how calm and relaxed the singer was.

He added to Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper: “You hear all these stories about Oasis being real rock and rollers but Liam was very polite and very happy to talk.

“There were fans outside and he went out to sign autographs and pose for pictures. He was with them for ages.

“They were having a good time and he didn’t seem at all bothered about the fact he had caused one of the world’s biggest bands to split.”

Liam, 36, seemingly wants to continue to perform as Oasis, while 42-year-old Noel is planning to start recording a solo album.

Sing a Sad Song...

So I go away for the weekend and Noel Gallagher quits Oasis. I am never leaving the house again in case U2 break up, mid tour.

It appears there was a bit too much Wibbling Rivalry in the band that resurrected rock roll in Great Britannia with Noel Gallagher stating "People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer." He must have felt like he was in a lonely place eh?

Tis a shame really, Don't Believe the Truth and Dig Out Your Soul had proved to the fans that Oasis were a band who had recovered their creative form and were delivering some top songs such as Lyla and I'm Outta Time and Falling Down.

So now we get to await the long wished for, Noel Gallagher solo album. I bet he's got a truck load of songs hidden in a box somewhere. Look for a solo album with a whole lot of Paul Weller on it....

What about Oasis and its three remaining members? I expect the record company will push the greatest hits numbers from know on and maybe release a B-sides album. Liam has become come into his own as a song writer and Gem probably has a few songs up his sleeve. Would a Noelless Oasis album be any good? Maybe time will tell.

Maybe Liam will go solo.... two words, Liam, Ian Brown.

Anyway, it's a big late in the midnight hour for me, in a bit.

Noel Leaves Oasis, What next?

Lead guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher quit Oasis because he can't work "a day longer" with his brother Liam, according to a statement he posted on the band's website.

The announcement came shortly after the last-minute cancellation of the group's scheduled performance on Friday at the Rock En Seine festival in Paris.

"It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight," Gallagher wrote in a statement. "People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."

In a lengthier statement, Gallagher thanked fans for their commitment to the band.

"I would like to thank all the Oasis fans, all over the world. The last 18 years have been truly, truly amazing (and I hate that word, but today is the one time I'll deem it appropriate). A dream come true. I take with me glorious memories."

He hinted that tension in the band had become unbearable.

"I feel you have the right to know that the level of verbal and violent intimidation towards me, my family, friends and comrades has become intolerable. And the lack of support and understanding from my management and bandmates has left me with no other option than to get me cape and seek pastures new."

Noel's brother and Oasis lead singer/guitarist Liam Gallagher founded the band in 1991 with Paul Arthurs, Paul McGuigan and Tony McCaroll. Noel joined shortly thereafter and took over as Oasis' lead songwriter.

The Gallagher brothers are the longest-standing members of the band; the rest of the current lineup includes guitarist/keyboardist Colin Archer, bassist Andy Bell and drummer Chris Sharrock.

The British band had performances scheduled Saturday at the Rock Am See Festival in Konstanz, Germany, and Sunday at the I-Day Festival in Milan, Italy, both of which are canceled, according to Gallagher's statement.

"Apologies to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in Paris, Konstanz and Milan," he wrote. No further news on the band's future has been announced.

Oasis' most recent album, Dig Out Your Soul, peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 in October.

NOEL GALLAGHER TO PERFORM 'FALLING DOWN' REMIX WITH AMORPHOUS ANDROGYNOUS

Noel is set to hook up with the psychedelic band Amorphous Androgynous to perform their epic re-working of 'Falling Down' on September 17th at Matter in London. Their 5-part, 22 minute remix of 'Falling Down' was released earlier in the year as a B-Side to the Oasis single and received great reviews.

Readers of Noel's 'Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere' will be familiar with the band as upon finding their album last year he wrote, 'If you're wondering what to ask Santa for x.mas, ask him for an album called "A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding In Your Mind (Vol 1. Space Rock)".

It's a compilation album by someone called "The Amorphous Androgynous" (I'd hazard a guess that's a made-up name). I've had it on in the dressing room for a month now. It's one of the best things I've ever, ever heard. Go and find it NOW! It'll blow your tiny little minds.

This special, one-off performance is to celebrate the release of Amorphous Androgynous' new album 'Vol 2 - Pagan Love Vibrations' which will be available to buy from 26th October.

Classic 70s space-rock pioneers Hawkwind are also set to perform so it's sure to be a very special gig!

"D'You Know What I Mean?" is a song by classic British rock band Oasis. DYWIM was the first single from Oasis's third album, the great rock and roll swindle, Be Here Now and was released on the 7th July 1997.

DYKWIM reached #1 in the UK singles chart, the 3rd Oasis song to do so. It was written by Oasis mainstay, Noel Gallagher. It was certified platinum for UK sales.

At the time "D'You Know What I Mean" was released, Oasis were at the height of their fame, and as a result, the single, along with the album, was highly anticipated. Upon its release it was critically and commercially successful.

The guitar chords on both the verse and the chorus are similar to the chords used for the Oasis single "Wonderwall" (F#m7/A/Esus4/Bsus4).

The song also shows more of Noel's influences. References include Bob Dylan ("Blood on the tracks and they must be mine"), and The Beatles ("Fool on the hill and I feel fine"), and even their own earlier work ("Don't look back in Anger "). The song also features a drum loop from N.W.A.

The Morse code in the background translates to include such sayings as "bugger all", "pork pies" and "Strawberry Fields Forever." Oasis haven't performed this song since 2002.

B-Sides

One of the B-sides, "Stay Young", has become a popular Oasis song, so much so that fans voted it onto the B-sides collection The Masterplan - one of only two B-sides from the Be Here Now period which made the album. The song was originally intended to be the "Digsy's Dinner" of Be Here Now (the lighthearted novelty track, such as "Digsy's Dinner" on Definitely Maybe and "She's Electric" on (What's the Story) Morning Glory?), until Noel set it aside in favour of "Magic Pie". Gallagher claims not to be particularly fond of the track.

Interview with Noel Gallagher on the song:

In a 1997 interview promoting Be Here Now, Noel Gallagher had the following to say about the first single: "I was going to make up some profound statement in the chorus but I couldn't come up with anything that fitted. Then I just thought "All my people right here, right now. D'You Know What I Mean? Yeah, Yeah" Very vague, very ambiguous, that'll do. Look in the mirror and wink while you're singing it and it's quite saucy. And I f***ing love that line, 'Coming in a mess, going out in style'. We were a bunch of scruffs from Manchester and we're going out in a Rolls Royce."

In another 1997 interview, this time on BBC, Noel Gallagher said: "I cant believe I wrote it, it's going to blow people away."

"The morse code in the background was inspired by Strawberry Fields. We got hold of a code book and tried to tap out 'Bugger All' to follow that line 'Don't look back cos you know what you might see'. But if anyone can tell me what we really said, please let me know. Profound lagerisms..."

Seven Ages of Rock

In an interview with the BBC for their documentary Seven Ages of Rock, Gallagher said of the song, "Its eight and a half minutes, the first single, the drums haven't fuckin' come in for two minutes- its all feedback!". He also says that he expected someone to ask them to edit the introduction to the song down, but such was their status in Britain, nobody did. They even performed the song on Top of the Pops, still playing most of the lengthy introduction.

The performance on Top of the Pops ended with a stage invasion by surrounding fans- the second of three stage invasions in the whole history of the show (the first was Nirvana and the last Symposium).

Cover information

The single cover photograph, by Michael Spencer Jones and directed by Brian Cannon of Microdot, was taken in front of the 'Blind Steps', a staircase in Wigan so called because they run past the Blind Workshop, which can be seen to the left of the shot. The steps can still be found on Darlington Street. The shoot was shrouded in secrecy to protect mass media coverage, but newspaper The Wigan Evening Post got exclusive rights to cover the event and subsequently sold the photos to the Daily Mirror. At a lunchtime break, Liam Gallagher and sleeve designer Brian Cannon enjoyed a pint of beer in the nearby Crispin Arms pub by Birkett Bank.

Oasis Slane Castle Concert Set List, UK

This was one of Oasis' big summer gigs. Slane Bloody Castle. Its the kind of place where U2 get Oasis to open for them. It's that big, and now Oasis commanded the line up of Kasbian and the Prodigy.

You may recall the Oasis concert that had a few set backs at Heaton Park, whereafter Oasis offered fans a ticker refund. This article suggests 20,000 people took up the offer.

Oasis star Noel Gallagher revealed around 20,000 "cheeky" people asked for their money back after their Heaton Park show was hit by technical problems.

The band were twice forced to leave the stage when they played the homecoming gig earlier this month due to a power fault.

The band went on to play a full set but as a gesture of goodwill concertgoers were offered their ticket money back.

The guitarist said: "It seems that around 20,000 of you have asked for a refund from that night at Heaton Park. 20,000! So you were genuinely disappointed?

"I don't recall seeing a 20,000 gap in the crowd. Tsk... some people," he wrote on his online blog.

Around 70,000 people saw the band abandon their opening track only for them to return and be driven off once more when they tried the second song.

At the time, Gallagher told fans: "We're not getting paid for this so buy a t-shirt on the way out. Credit crunch and that, keep my kids in sweets. Kind of regret offering you your money back now."

something something....is not the first image that springs to mind when you mention Liam Gallagher and Whiski.

But when the Oasis frontman and his band called into a Royal Mile bar they wanted to head into the kitchen to see how a haggis is cooked.

The world-famous band spent seven hours eating and drinking in Whiski.

And they were so impressed with the service from staff they left a gift that will live forever in their minds.

The band, who called into the bar on Tuesday, handed over four VIP tickets for last night's sell-out Murrayfield gig as a thank-you for the afternoon they had enjoyed.

Spearheaded by singer Liam, the band also asked to be shown the kitchen area so they could see a haggis being cooked for the first time.

Owner Gary Still said: "They came in at about three o'clock but we didn't even realise it was them until about five, when one of the workers recognised them.

"They just seemed like ordinary guys in having a few drinks.

"They were all extremely pleasant, and dealt with the autograph hunters and people wanting photographs very well. We've had bands in before, but these guys were the most famous yet."

There were around 12 of them in total, including sound engineers and other crew, although band leader and main writer Noel Gallagher was not in attendance.

Despite being rock and roll stars, they told fans that instead of hitting traditionally trendy areas such as George Street, they were more than happy half a world away in the Royal Mile pub.

Little by little, more members of the public realised who was drinking nearby and squeezed through the door to seek photos and autographs with their heroes and performers of classic songs familiar to millions.

Mr Still, who rebranded the pub in May 2007, added: "They left a nice tip, although I'm not sure exactly how much, and drank mostly beer, though I'm sure they tried some of our whiskies as well.

"It's great for us that someone as popular as this should choose to stay with us in the bar. Some had approached asking where they would go next and they replied they would stay in Whiski because they thought it was 'cool'.

"They went down to the kitchen as well because they'd never seen a haggis before, so we cooked one for them so they could see for themselves how it was all done.

"We did generally leave them alone, and although a lot of people came up to speak to them they were generally left in peace."

The band, who have played several times in the Capital before, are understood to have left the pub at around 10pm.

Oasis played the first of their big concert series in the place synomous with the band, Manchester on 4th June2009.

The show was notable for being a bit of a shocker with things going wrong around the band.

The band, playing in front of 70,000 fans, were finishing their first song - Rock 'n' Roll Star - when the sound system cut out. The Gallagher brothers left the stage and returned a couple of minutes later, launching into Lyla.

But two huge screens relaying the action to the capacity crowd went blank and there was a plume of smoke from behind the stage.

The band left again - and did not return until 45 minutes later.

Noel later said the show would be free - who knows if that means people actually get a refund...

What's notable about the set list is that Live Forever has snuck back in!

Noel Gallagher, songwriter for Oasis, has made a classic call on on his brother Liam, whom he has called “the angriest man you’ll ever meet”. The two are well known for their rivalry with one another, recorded arguments and punch ups were nom du joer in their Britpop heyday.

Noel drops this line of Our Kid:

“He’s like a man with a fork in world of soup.”

At least he didn't say Liam was like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife....
